ABSTRACT

The increasing need to improve the sustainability of industrial processes requires more flexible and intensified solutions. For this purpose, nowadays lots of efforts are made to switch from batch to continuous processes, the latter being able to ensure the same processing history to all fluid elements, with a consequent better control of the operating conditions and product quality. The present work aims at developing a continuous flow reactor for the production of several fine chemicals, including medical-surgical aids, but also other substances for specific industrial sectors. The plant is basically an inline reactor equipped with various static mixers and side inlets, and it is conceived to ensure on-site production. This is an important feature also in light of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, which asked for flexible and distributed production of chemicals. Numerical simulations based on computational fluid dynamics are employed to study the performance, in terms of pressure drops and degree of mixing, of different static mixers, that is, the Lightnin Inliner Series 50 and Ross low pressure drop (LPD), combining various elements of mixing and injections in different operating conditions in both laminar and turbulent regimes. The results highlighted how numerical simulations may represent a valid tool for supporting the detailed design of such flow reactors by allowing the evaluation of the optimal design solutions.

ABSTRACT

While facial coverings reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 by viral filtration, masks capable of viral inactivation by heating can provide a complementary method to limit transmission. Inspired by reverse-flow chemical reactors, we introduce a new virucidal face mask concept driven by the oscillatory flow of human breath. The governing heat and mass transport equations are solved to evaluate virus and CO2 transport. Given limits imposed by the kinetics of SARS-CoV-2 thermal inactivation, human breath, safety, and comfort, heated masks may inactivate SARS-CoV-2 to medical-grade sterility. We detail one design, with a volume of 300 ml at 90°C that achieves a 3-log reduction in viral load with minimal impedance within the mask mesh, with partition coefficient around 2. This is the first quantitative analysis of virucidal thermal inactivation within a protective face mask, and addresses a pressing need for new approaches for personal protective equipment during a global pandemic.

ABSTRACT

This work describes the design and implementation of an automated device for catalytic materials testing by direct modifications to a gas chromatograph (GC). The setup can be operated as a plug-flow isothermal reactor and enables the control of relevant parameters such as reaction temperature and reactant partial pressures directly from the GC. High-quality kinetic data (including reaction rates, product distributions, and activation barriers) can be obtained at almost one-tenth of the fabrication cost of analogous commercial setups. With these key benefits including automation, low cost, and limited experimental equipment instrumentation, this implementation is intended as a high-throughput catalyst screening reactor that can be readily utilized by materials synthesis researchers to assess the catalytic properties of their synthesized structures in vapor-phase chemistries.
